It took me forever before I could post it!
I have been using painters’ tape to guide my machine for many years. I even wrote on it here 9 years ago. It’s great for marking out lines and for diagonal seams, but it also works for HSTs. You can purchase plastic or laser seam guides that you can attach with adhesives to your machine, but they are bulky and difficult to use.
I made my own tape, which is beautiful, easy to use, and functional.
Diagonal Seam Tape(tm). is a washi tape which is thin and tough, but also easily removable. Here’s a -long page dedicated to it:
Diagonal Seam Tape
The black line represents a 1/4″ seam allowance and is helpful when making HST’s, keeping strips straight while strip piecing, or even helping a beginner learn to piece. They are not a necessity, but a nice perk. The black lines represent 1/4″ seam allowances and can be helpful for making HSTs, strip piecing or helping beginners learn how to piece.
